Market Research

The internship main goal is to do a market research for our company. Beside that you are the right-hand of your supervisor (PMC Manager).


Reason for the investigation

360°KAS is a manufacturer of venturi type (steam) desuperheaters. Together with the associated control valves our venturi desuperheaters are mounted onto a skid to realize a so called PRDS (Pressure Reducing and Desuperheating System). Recently 360°KAS has manufactured and supplied several PRDS systems for fertilizer plants in the Middle East. This was a new development within 360°KAS.

Research question
Based on these deliveries the need arises within 360°KAS to know more about the fertilizer market and specifically the market for so-called greenfield plant projects worldwide. In other words which fertilizer plants are built in the coming years, who is the owner and who will build them.


Main questions to be answered:

  • Who are the worldwide main fertilizer manufacturers/players?
  • Which engineering and construction companies (EPC’s) build fertilizer plants?
  • Expected greenfield projects worldwide?
  • Fertilizer market information (growth, amounts, shares, countries etc.)?
  • How many PRDS systems are required in a fertilizer plant? 

Your profile

  • Bachelor student in “HBO- Technische bedrijfskunde”,'HBO- Bedrijfskunde' or a student in International Business Management.
  • Knowledge about MS Office.
  • International industries and technical company’s has your interest.

Fertilizers are any solid, liquid or gaseous substances containing one or more plant nutrients.
They are either applied to the soil, directly on the plant (foliage) or added to aqueous solutions, in order to maintain soil fertility, improve crop development, yield and/or crop quality.
The purpose of fertilizers are to supplement the natural supply of soil nutrient, build up soil fertility in order to satisfy the demand of crops with a high yield potential and to compensate for the nutrients taken by harvested products or lost by unavoidable leakages to the environment, in order to maintain good soil conditions for cropping.

Industrial production of fertilizers involves several chemical processes.
The basis for producing nitrogen fertilizers is ammonia, which is produced in industrial scale by combining nitrogen in the air with hydrogen in natural gas, under high temperature and pressure and in the presence of catalysts. This process for producing ammonia is called the ‘Haber-Bosch’ process. Phosphorus is produced from phosphate rock by digesting the latter with a strong acid. It is then combined with ammonia to form Diammoniumphosphate (DAP) or Monoammonium phosphate (MAP) through a process called ammonization. Potassium is mined from salt deposits. Large potash deposits are found in Canada and Potassium is mined from salt deposits. Large potash deposits are found in Canada and Russia, which are the world’s major producers of this nutrient. Phosphate and potash are sold separately or combined with, e.g. nitrogen, to form NPK fertilizers. The side streams of the main production process (e.g. gases, nitrogen chemicals) can be utilized for industrial products.
